Hamdeok Beach: An afternoon at my favorite Jeju beach

Beautiful white sand beach in a bustling seaside town.

Hallasan Mountain Hamdeok Beach

Hamdeok Beach is one of Jeju’s most popular beaches. It’s also perhaps my favorite! There are two reasons for this.

First is that the beach is one of Jeju’s most picturesque, due to its white sand, emerald water, and the spectacular views of Seoubong Peak to the east of the beach.

Second is that It’s located a short drive or bus journey to the east of Jeju City, making it the perfect seaside destination for anyone staying or living in the city (like I do).

This article will tell you everything you need to know to have a fun trip to Hamdeok Beach.

About Hamdeok Beach

Hamdeok Beach is a popular beach on the northeast coast of Jeju. It’s beautiful thanks to its white sand and clear sea, but also accessible thanks to its location near to the city, and convenient thanks to the hotels, restaurants, cafes, and bars that are nearby.

Hamdeok Beach is a good place to swim in the summer months. When the tide goes, the water becomes shallow out you can paddle way out into the bay. When the tide is in, the beach becomes a deeper pool that you can swim in.

The beach’s location near the city means it’s typically quite busy. It also has plenty of nearby facilities to make a visit comfortable. As well as a large car park, the area around the beach is lined with cafes, restaurants, and hotels.

Getting to Hamdeok Beach

Photo: Google Maps

You can get to Hamdeok Beach by bus from Jeju City. The journey takes around 50 minutes from Jeju Bus Terminal on the 201 bus or around 40 minutes on the 101 Express bus, also from the bus terminal. There are buses that go to the area, so check out Kakao Maps to see if there’s a faster way from the place you’re staying.

Driving or taking a taxi from Jeju City to Hamdeok Beach will take around 30 minutes from the bus terminal. Hamdeok Beach has a large car park with an overflow area and despite it being one of the island’s busiest beaches, I’ve never had a problem parking even during summer.

What to do at Hamdeok Beach

Check out all three beaches

Hamdeok Beach is actually made up of three beaches. Two are easy to see: the main one you see when you arrive, one just across the road to the west.

Photo: Hamdeok’s second beach

But there’s also a third beach at the bottom of Seoubong Peak that’s slightly hidden away from the rest of the area. Although don’t be mistaken, it’s still very popular.

Hike Seoubong Peak

Photo: The beach at the bottom of Seoubong

Seoubong Peak is a small volcanic hill that directly borders Hamdeok Beach. Several short trails go to the summit and around the hill. You can easily climb up and down within an hour, although parts of the trail are quite steep!

This is one of my favorite Jeju Oreum and one of my favorite walks on the island in general, in part thanks to the beautiful views you get over the island. In fact, the view from Seoubong Peak out over Jeju is so good that it’s the main cover image I use on the home page of this website (see it here).

Walk along the beach path

There’s actually a short path from the main Hamdeok Beach to the third beach mentioned in the section above. It’s just a couple of hundred meters but you get some nice views out over the cliffs and into the ocean. The grassy area here is also a good spot for a picnic and you can find some shade in the trees on hotter days.

Check out the market

The beach is home to a small market with people selling Jeju souvenirs and mandarins. You can find this to the east of the main beach.

Walk along the seafront

Just east of the beach is a coastal road with cafes, restaurants, and hotels on one side and panoramic views of the coast on the other. Explore this path or try some of our favorite locations from the list below.

Go camping

There is a campsite on the north side of Hamdeok Beach. It’s free, so you can bring a tent and pitch up. It can get busy in summer, though.
